The Break & The Shift
BOS and CHoCH Explained
Two Signals That Change Everything
Once you can identify a trend, you need to know when it continues and when it changes. This comes down to two concepts:
BOS – Break of Structure (Continuation)
A BOS occurs when price breaks a previous structural point in the direction of the trend.
In a bullish trend:
- •Price breaks above the most recent Higher High
- •This confirms the trend is continuing
- •It's a signal of strength
In a bearish trend:
- •Price breaks below the most recent Lower Low
- •This confirms the downtrend is continuing
- •Sellers remain in control
Key Rule: A valid BOS requires a candle body close beyond the structural point – not just a wick.
Note: A wick sweeping through a previous high/low can still count as a new swing high/low for structure-labeling purposes (see Trend Anatomy). But that alone does NOT count as a BOS – a BOS specifically requires a candle body close beyond the level, not just a wick poking through it.
CHoCH – Change of Character (First Reversal Sign)
A CHoCH is the first signal that the current trend may be shifting.
In a bullish trend, CHoCH occurs when:
- •Price breaks below the most recent Higher Low
- •This is the first Lower Low – breaking the HH/HL sequence
- •It doesn't guarantee reversal, but it's a warning sign
In a bearish trend, CHoCH occurs when:
- •Price breaks above the most recent Lower High
- •This is the first Higher High – breaking the LH/LL sequence
BOS vs CHoCH – The Critical Difference
| Signal | Direction | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| BOS | With the trend | Continuation confirmed |
| CHoCH | Against the trend | Potential reversal starting |
How to Trade These Signals
- •After a BOS: Look for pullback entries in the direction of the trend
- •After a CHoCH: Be cautious. Wait for a second confirmation (another BOS in the new direction) before switching bias
- •Never trade a CHoCH alone – it's a warning, not a guaranteed reversal
"BOS tells you the trend is alive. CHoCH tells you it might be dying. Neither tells you the future – they tell you the present."
